New Motor Approval List

Sunday, March 10th, 2013

Welcome to the new Motor Approval section of the forum. This is intended to replace the motor list that currently resides on the ROAR website. This new section adds to the existing list, a number of new motors are are approved based on their arrival date, as confirmed by shipper tracking data. Over time, the list on ROARRacing.com will be transferred to the forum list, which will eventually be the sole source of motor approval information.

In the forum you’ll find new motors that have been approved over the last month, with more detail than ever before, making the process more open and useful. You’ll find the date of approval, tracking data, inspection status, Availability Check status, and Executive Committee Approval status. You will also find detailed photos of the motor’s components, which will be used by the tech staff at ROAR National events for component verification, and are visible by the public for their own reference. The whole process is designed to be more open and informative, giving ROAR officials, Affiliated track owners, and ROAR members more data and a more open process of approval of the motors our members use in ROAR sanctioned racing endeavors. It’s our hope that this information will speed the tech process and give affiliated tracks and organizations the resources to more easily determine compliance, to keep the playing field (especially in the Spec classes) as level as possible.

Please let ROAR know if you have any suggestions to make this and other future product approval sections of the site more useful for their intended purposes. We hope you enjoy these new sections and find them useful in preparing for any one of the many prestigious ROAR National Championships and regional events.

The new motor approval section of the forums is visible to all website visitors HERE.

Approval status of Trinity D3.5 and D3.5-based OEM motors

Thursday, January 17th, 2013

After a great deal of consideration the ROAR Executive Committee has determined that the Trinity D3.5 motor and others based on the D3.5, do not comply with the organization’s required specifications for motors in the 17.5 stock class. The determination is based on the fact that motors being sold are built with wire that’s larger than maximum specification permitted. All of the random samples of the D3.5 based motors during the announced compliance checks tested with wire that’s larger than the maximum dimension. Rule 8.8.4.3.1 states clearly that “The three slotted stator must be wound with 17.5 turns of 2 strands of a maximum diameter of 20AWG or 0.813 mm per slot. A diameter of .813mm is the nominal measurement of 20AWG wire, and that it is the stated maximum wire diameter permitted. It’s on this basis that the Executive Committee made its determination.

Spec Motor Approval Announcement

Friday, October 5th, 2012

Until ROAR is able to complete spot checks on many of the more popular spec motors currently on the market and establish some new approval guidelines, new approvals will be postponed. ROAR will move as quickly as possible to establish new approval standards so approvals can resume for new motors, but this is superseded by its responsibility to ensure fair and relatively equal competition in the spec classes. The specifications will be better refined to ensure this outcome. As soon as the testing is complete and the revised specifications are better defined, ROAR will publish the new specs on the ROAR website, Facebook page and in the 2012 Rulebook, which will be finalized when the motor specs are complete.

ROAR non-timing ESC list updated

Tuesday, April 17th, 2012

After considerable work by the Technical Director, Ron Schuur, ROAR has established testing parameters for ESCs that feature zero timing modes. The new procedures and equipment were used to precisely measure if any timing is provided electronically through the ESC. The list of approved ESCs that resulted from the first round of tests are now published on the approved brushless ESC list. ESCs that do not appear on the list have either failed to meet the proper standards as required for ROAR competition, or they have not been submitted for approval. ROAR Thanks everyone for their patience and looks forward to great 2012 season!
